What's It Worth? 1960 MGA Roadster ..."Safety Fast"
In 1954 MG had to do something fast to get a bigger slice of the expanding Export and USA Sports Car Market. In the USA WWII Vets had grown to adore and want European Roadsters from there days being stationed across The Big Pond. They mostly lusted after British makes like MG and Triumph, thus filling our shores with English Droptops.
The aging MG "T" Series was no match for the Robust and Swoopy styled Triumph TR2 and TR3. Needing to at least look more modern MG for model year 1955 introduced the very sleek MGA. New was the look. Old was the use of wooded floor boards and re-worked T Series chassis. Despite this combo of old and new the MGA sold well to a Sport Car Lusting Public.
Engines were the B Series with sizes ranging from 1500cc-1600cc. Horsepower would range from a tepid 68 to a blistering 79 for the 1600cc engine. For 1968 a Twin Cam version of 1600cc would be available with a tire melting 100 horsepower but due to warranty issues was soon discontinued.
Over a 100,000 MGA's were produced. Production ended in 1962 to make room for the much more modern MGB. Oddly most MGA production went to the export market. Only 5869 cars were sold on the home market, the lowest percentage of any British car
MGA's like all Brit Roadsters of the Era were filled with charm and character. If you didn't mind side curtains and typical Mechanical and Electrical Gremlins an MGA is one of the best choices you can make for a top down classic roadster.
